Aldi, Walmart & "Same Company" Myths: Are Totes Sold Elsewhere Real?
Is Trader Joe's the same as Aldi? Are totes resold at Walmart or by third parties authentic? Clearing up the common ownership myths and resale authenticity questions.
Two myths come up constantly: isn't Trader Joe's just Aldi?
and are the totes I see at Walmart / from a reseller the real thing?
The Aldi connection — true but misunderstood
There are two separate Aldi companies, split decades ago between two brothers: Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd. Trader Joe's is owned by Aldi Nord. The "Aldi" stores you see in the U.S. are operated by Aldi Süd — a different company. So "Trader Joe's is Aldi" is half-right: TJ's shares family roots with Aldi, but U.S. Aldi and Trader Joe's are run by two distinct companies, and the mini tote is a Trader Joe's product. You won't find the genuine TJ's tote on an Aldi shelf.
Totes "at Walmart" or from third parties
Trader Joe's products are sold only at Trader Joe's. If you see TJ's totes at Walmart, a flea market, or a third-party Amazon/eBay listing, those are resold or counterfeit — not an official wholesale channel. Resold genuine bags can be fine (that's normal secondhand selling), but the listing is not "Trader Joe's selling at Walmart." Authenticate before you pay: use the real vs. fake checklist and confirm the colorway was a real drop on the tracker.
